Waimoku Falls drops 400 feet down a lava cliff face in Haleakala National Park near the Hana Highway in Maui, Hawaii.

In some place Waimoku Falls is listed as the largest waterfall on Maui. It probably is not the largest waterfall on the island but it may very well be the most picturesque as it drops 400 feet straight down a lava cliff face surrounded by lush tropical rainforest.

Waimoku Falls is located in Haleakala National Park upstream from the Pools of Ohe'o also known as the Seven Sacred Pools along the Hana Highway also called Highway 31 south of Hana. To reach the falls park in the parking lot at mile marker #42 and cross over the highway and look for the Pipiwai Trail above the Seven Sacred Pools.

The Pipiwai Trail is one of the best hikes in Hawaii as it takes visitors up the Ohe'o Gulch through lush rainforest and at one point through a beautiful bamboo forest. As an added bonus the trail takes hikers right past the lookout for another beautiful waterfall in Hawaii the 180 foot high Makahiku Falls. Waimoku Falls is located a little under 2 miles from the parking lot so the total hike to the falls is roughly 4 miles round-trip.

The scene at Waimoku Falls is spectacular as the water tumbles right down the lava cliff face and visiting here is a spiritual experience for some. But caution must be advised to those traveling to Waimoku Falls.

At the the base of the falls rocks will sometimes tumble down the cliff face creating a hazard for those viewing the falls. Also the area is subject to heavy rainfall and flash floods which can make travel conditions on the trail slippery and hazardous. Check in at the visitor center located near the parking lot before making this hike to find out the weather and trail conditions.
